As a kid, I was obsessed with monsters. I mean really obsessed. Every full moon, I would put in my plastic werewolf fangs, drip ketchup (not catsup) down the sides of my mouth and roam the neighborhood. Slipping in and out of the darkness, I would spend the next hour howling and pretending I was the Wolfman. My parents eventually found out what I was doing and to their credit, never stopped me or forbade me for carrying out my monthly performance. I like to think that it was very healthy. Maybe they did too. In my hometown, Marco’s Bookstore was a magical place. Every month, I would go downtown to check out the new issues of Famous Monsters of Filmland and Creepy. The pictures and stories within would transport me to other worlds. Worlds where in my mind, the monsters were the good guys. Although I eventually stopped buying these magazines as I grew into my teens and Marco’s is now long gone, I still have a strong affection for black & white horror movies and monster magazines. And when I want to travel back in time, I just open the plastic storage bin in my closet. As I leaf through the 1971 FMOF Yearbook, I’m 9 years old again and that’s pretty cool. Now if you’ll excuse me, there’s a full moon tonight and I’ve got some work to do.
Linoleum Block Prints. After much trial and error, this is hands down my favorite way to express myself. From choosing the subject and layout, to carving, then to inking the first print, it's new and exciting each time.
I never strive for absolute perfection but instead prefer a loose and incomplete feel to the final product. The eye will always fill in the missing pieces which makes each print unique to whoever is viewing it.
Pop culture. Old movies. Warner Bros. cartoons. The ocean. Retro magazine and newspaper ads.
Whatever the subject, I hope my perspective and experience becomes part of the piece in a positive way. Something you can look at and see a new detail each time.
In the next few weeks, I'll be offering new products for sale - just in time for Halloween!
Making plans for Halloween? Come back for a visit soon. I'll have a few surprises!
